As a person inclined to be creative, I’ve spent many hours labouring over something I was creating. Prior to starting the hands-on process, I would spend quite some time thinking about it. Meditating on what it was, what it would ultimately culminate into and what I would need to do in order for the vision to materialize. When it finally comes to putting things into motion, they can take their own course.
In talking with my sister about one of her paintings, she expressed a lot of things about the painting that she didn’t like. She pointed out flaw after flaw. To me, the painting looked great. From the color palette to the little details, there were so many things I loved about it. Even some things she pointed out as faults and mistakes, I thought were beautiful.
As bewildering as it was, I could still understand her point of view. There had been so many times where I was dissatisfied with the work I had done and criticized it mercilessly. I was blinded by my mess-ups versus what I thought it should be, upset that the perfect vision I had was not fully realized.
With all the creatives that have existed and do exist today, none surpass God in skill, intentionality, wonder and love for the craft and put into the craft. We have not even begun to understand the great detail God has put into this existence. In the visual sense, God’s creations can be so exact in geometric proportion and then be arranged so unconventionally, but still beautifully and efficiently. His concepts and principles are so complex, but not in any way convoluted or lacking.
What amazes me, as God created the universe, with each day, it was concluded that what had been created was good. From the moment time began right down to when the blueprint for humanity was formed, it was good.
We hear throughout the Bible how God has made us (Job 31:15, Psalm 139, Jeremiah 1:5). Knitting us together. Orchestrating our DNA sequence. Piecing together our personality. And when we were done, God said it was good. You were another masterpiece finished. A work of art manifesting the power of the Creator.
This world is tainted by sin and there are imperfections all around. We have faults as well, but when God looks at us, He sees good. Even if He knows what He had envisioned for us and this world, He still takes delight in us. The sight of us doesn’t revolt Him and He longs for communion with us. We might not be where we should be in life, but by His grace, we can grow into the vision He has for us.
